The sifting through discarded items inside a commercial bin is known as dumpster diving, named after best-known manufacturer of commercial bins, Dempsey, who uses the trade name "Dumpster" for their bins.

Traditionally, most people who resort to diving are generally poor and are at risk of health hazards.

Others might be artists looking for materials to create future works of art or environmentalists that rescure items such as computers and repair them for the less fortunate.

The practice of dumpster diving is also known as D-mart.
